Gree Wins Bid for VRF 2014 Winter Olympics

On September 15, Gree announced that it has won the bid for the biggest commercial complex at the Sochi Mall in Sochi, the host city of the 2014 Winter Olympics

Sochi Mall, a support building for the Winter Olympics, is located opposite the Sochi administrative building in the downtown area. Covering an area of 145,000 m2, the Sochi Mall is a large-scale retail and entertainment multi-functional center.

After being the supplier for the Beijing Olympic Games and South Africa World Cup, Gree has once again been approved by one of the highest-level sporting events in the world.

Although Russia is a traditional power in the Winter Olympics, it is a first for the country to host the Winter Olympic Games. After the previous two failures of bids for the Winter Olympics, Sochi, one of the most famous coastal resort cities in Russia, has finally become the host city for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. As a result, the construction of the facilities for the games has attracted nationwide attention.

The beautiful Black Sea coastal Sochi intends to invest US$ 12 billion to construct the facilities for the Winter Olympics, including the Sochi Mall. Sochi Mall plans to open by the end of 2011, becoming the area’s first modern shopping center. It will be on a scale comparable to the enormous shopping centers, Westfield London and the Mall of the Emirates in Dubai. Sochi Mall is estimated to attract 12 million visitors per year.

After competitive bidding, Gree finally became the central air conditioner supplier for the Sochi Mall. Gree will provide the project its latest centrifugal chillers. Experts said the international games have a very high standard for their central air conditioners, especially because the Eastern European countries and regions have harsh climates. In the large entertainment and shopping center, the air conditioners have to meet the needs of low energy consumption, while dealing with higher population densities and higher working loads.

Gree’s success with the bid resulted from its continuous pursuit of independent R&D. It has become a good example of China’s own brands that continuously garner international recognition.

Gree, one of the biggest air conditioner R&D, production, sales and after-sale service enterprises in the world, will bring the new trend of ‘Designed in China’ to the international air conditioning industry.
